Native American Style flutes are fun to play! Note the word "Style". To be called a NativeAmerican Flute, the flute must be created by a registered member of a recognized tribe. I am not a member of any Native American tribe, so if I use the term "Native American" in reference to the flutes, it is merely because that is what many people call the instrument.

Any one can pick up a flute and be playing beautiful music in a short period of time. Since the Native Americans had no written music, or any concept of "keys", the music was simply improvised. Just start playing...close your eyes and make up your own melodies. The most difficult part of learning to play is to be able to cover the holes completely. Once that is mastered, the rest is easy. The sound of the flutes is often described as "haunting". People seem to be drawn to the sound. Imitate the sounds of nature, or just experiment with the notes.

About my flutes

My goal is to provide simple, affordable flutes. My flutes are the six hole type, and are tuned to the Pentatonic scale. At present, all of my flutes are made in the traditional manner.....the flutes are not tuned to a specific key, but are approximately F or F#. Flutes can be ordered tuned to F, F# or G at no additional cost. Overall length is 21-1/2 inches. Each flute is carefully crafted, tuned, sanded with very fine grit sandpaper, then given several coats of Shellac. (Shellac is a natural finish which has been around for a long time.) After the finish hardens, the tuning is finalized. The sound is checked often during the building process. These flutes are largely hand made, so they do not have a "cookie cutter" appearance. If you are looking for a flute which looks as though it was made with fifty thousand dollars worth of equipment, these are not for you.

The flute pictured below is representative of my flutes. It is 21.5 inches long and is made of Eastern Red Cedar.

Things to keep in mind.....

I have a personal collection of over seventy flutes. The cost of each flute ranged from fifteen dollars to over four hundred dollars. I learned early on that the price paid for a flute....or the looks of a flute....is not an indication of the quality of the sound it will produce. I'm very particular about the way they sound....sometimes overly particular, or so I've been told. If they don't sound good to me, I don't send them out.
